March is National Nutrition Month and although most members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics would like to say every month is National Nutrition Month (NNM), the campaign actually originated in 1973 as National Nutrition Week. According to an article in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics from 2006, National Nutrition Week was:“an opportunity to promote the profession as well as to serve as a vehicle for delivering nutrition education messages to the public.” The Week turned into a Nutrition Month in 1980 with registered dietitians promoting it and the public... Over the years, caloric sweeteners, particularly those in sodas or soft drinks, have taken the brunt of the blame for the obesity epidemic. Recently the argument about sweeteners and appetite has come to the forefront again, leaving people to once again question whether sweetened foods, juices, and sodas are responsible for our insatiable appetites. Many of the studies around sweeteners and satiety focus on pure glucose or pure fructose.a large sundae, fountain type glass filled with fountain soda (root beer?), soda straw (Photo credit: Wikipedia)In general, it’s important to keep in mind that... The Caveman Diet: What it’s all about? Are our bodies really designed to eat as our ancestors did millions of years ago? That’s what advocates of the Paleo Diet say. As hunters and gatherers, cavemen ate wild game, fish, nuts, seeds, fresh fruits and vegetables, along with oils made from olives, walnuts, coconut and avocado. What you won’t get on the Paleo diet are staples you are used to having in your everyday meals: dairy, legumes, breads, cereals, other grains and sugar—foods cavemen did not eat.Paleo Diet Restrictions: What you can and can’t haveThe U.S. Dietary Guidelines encourage us to... I have been consulting at adult residential facilities for about 20 years and the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes has about doubled in this time frame, which is consistent with statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The owners of these facilities ask me, as their dietitian, why the increase? Is it something the clients are eating, or not eating? Is it the sitting around and lack of physical activity? Is it those additional pounds that have crept on over the years? Or is it the fact that clients are living longer? Not surprisingly, it is a combination of all the above.... Continue Reading

Halloween cupcakes with candy corn and pumpkin decoration. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)Halloween is a fun holiday for both kids and adult – who doesn’t love to dress up and go trick-or-treating?! But for most of America, this holiday has become all about candy. Statistics have shown that Americans purchase about 600 million pounds of candy for Halloween and the average American eats 24 pounds of candy a year, most of which is consumed around Halloween.
